Aquila 50 Sail: Aquila Catamarans Enters the Sailing Market

This month, Aquila Catamarans will introduce its first-ever sailing catamaran: the Aquila 50 Sail, set to make its world premiere at the Miami International Boat Show (11–15 February).

Known globally for its power catamarans, Aquila’s move into sail marks a carefully considered expansion of the brand. Rather than adapting an existing platform, the 50 Sail has been developed as a purpose-built sailing catamaran, drawing on Aquila’s offshore engineering expertise and a leadership team whose background in sailing predates the company itself.

While Aquila is best known for redefining the power catamaran market, sailing has always been part of its DNA. Founder Lex Raas began his career in the sailing world, and the Raas family — now leading the company — brings decades of competitive sailing, ocean crossings, and yacht development experience. The Aquila 50 Sail represents a return to those roots, approached with the same focus on usability, comfort, and real-world cruising that defines the brand today.

A New Approach to the 50-Foot Sailing Catamaran

The Aquila 50 Sail has been designed for owners who prioritise space, autonomy, and ease of use, rather than pure performance sailing. Aquila is clear in its positioning: this is not a lightweight performance cat, but a refined cruising platform aimed at the centre of the production market.

One of its most distinctive features is the fixed forward entertaining area, replacing the traditional trampoline with a practical, enclosed social space. Combined with direct bridge-to-bow access, this layout improves safety, comfort, and everyday usability — particularly when moving around the yacht underway or at anchor.

Inside, large panoramic windows define the salon and galley, flooding the interior with natural light and enhancing the sense of volume. Layout flexibility is a key focus, with four, five, or six cabin configurations, each featuring private access and ensuite bathrooms. This approach maximises privacy and makes the Aquila 50 Sail equally suited to private ownership or charter operation.

Hybrid Propulsion, Integrated from the Start

A key differentiator of the Aquila 50 Sail is the availability of Aquila’s Hybrid Ocean Drive™ system, developed in partnership with Torqeedo. The system combines twin 50 kW electric motors with an 80 kWh lithium battery bank, supported by optional generators to extend range.

Importantly, this hybrid solution has been engineered into the yacht from the outset, rather than added as an afterthought. The result is quiet, precise manoeuvring, reduced emissions, and flexible cruising options — all without compromising reliability or onboard comfort.

Built with Proven Aquila Construction Standards

Construction follows the same controlled manufacturing processes used across Aquila’s power ranges, including resin infusion, one-piece moulds, and strict quality control throughout the build process. These methods deliver structural integrity, consistency, and long-term durability — qualities that matter to owners planning extended cruising or intensive use.

World Premiere at Miami International Boat Show 2026

The Aquila 50 Sail will be presented to the public for the first time at the Miami International Boat Show 2026, offering prospective owners an early opportunity to experience Aquila’s interpretation of a modern sailing catamaran.
